How Is Breast Cancer Treated?

Breast cancer is treated in accordance with the kind of breast cancer you are diagnosed with and the extent to which the disease has spread. Below, are the common treatment modalities in the management of breast cancer.

  • Surgery. An operation where the surgeon removes the cancerous tissue.

  • Chemotherapy. A cytotoxic drug (an oral agent or drug given intravenously) is used to reduce or eliminate the cancer cells.

  • Hormonal therapy. The medication prevents cancer cells from receiving the necessary hormones to stimulate cancer growth.

  • Biological therapy. This treatment signals your body’s immune system to attack the cancer cells and reduce the side effects from other cancer treatments.

  • Radiation therapy. High doses of radiation are targeted at the cancer cells in an attempt to decrease and eliminate tumor cells.
